We made the cutest and messiest little yarn pumpkin craft ever inspired by Debbie of OneLittleProject.com! These are not for the weak at heart folks! If you are not into the mess, don’t even attempt this one. You will get messy. Your hands will be covered in glue and it will be glorious!
When I told my 2 youngest daughters what we were going to make and how messy it would be, one said “bring on the mess” and the other said “um no moooom, that’s gross”.
I used to be the mom that cringed at messy projects, but I’ve realized there are some great and sometimes hilarious memories made in the messy stuff. So now I don’t run from it, I breathe and embrace it. I’m still a work in progress, but it gets easier every time. Although, this project I wouldn’t attempt with younger kids. I did this with my 10 year old.
Yarn Pumpkin Craft
- Orange Yarn
- About 4 Ounces of Glue
- 12 Inch Balloon
- 2 Green Pipe Cleaners
- 1 Brown Pipe Cleaner
- Plastic Fork
1- Cut 21 pieces of yarn about 36 inches long.
2- Blow up the balloon halfway and tie a piece of yarn on the tied part of the balloon. Hang the balloon in a cupboard door over a countertop. This makes it easier to wrap the yarn around.
3- Put half of the glue in the bowl.
4- Place 1 strand of your pre-cut yarn in the bowl and push it down till it’s soaked in glue.
5- Run the glue covered yarn through the fork to get any excess glue off.
6- Start at the top or bottom of the balloon and wrap around making sure the ends are pushed down firmly.
7- Repeat until all the yarn is used.
8- Let it hang until dry (at least 24 hours).
9- Press and separate the yarn from the balloon completely.
10- Cut a small hole at the very top of the balloon where it is tied. This will release the air slowly so you can detach any of the yarn that is still stuck.
11- Pull the deflated balloon out carefully.
12- To make the stem and vine, wrap the pipe cleaners around your pinky. They easily attach to the yarn so I didn’t need to glue them on.
