Music has been a little out of the lesson plans for us, OK a lot, like almost never.
There you have it, my latest homeschool confession.
Did you know that there are quite a few free online music lessons for kids? Yeah, I was a bit shocked too.
Free Online Music Lessons for Kids
I have done a few guitar lessons that I found online with my oldest daughter, but I struggle with it because I never learned to play an instrument. I have no clue about music theory (if that is what it’s called) so it’s pretty close to impossible to teach them.
But alas where there is a will there is a way, yeah? So I google until I find something or someone to get us started. Cause I know I can’t be the only unmusical parent to have musical kids that want to learn musical stuff…right? OK and did I also mention my budget for music is ZERO, so it will also have to be free…oh please, please, please let there be something?
Google what ya got?
I found some. Check it out.
Free Guitar Lessons for Kids
KidsGuitarZone.com – The Lessons are strategically planned to cover all basic guitar techniques, learning some fun popular songs along the way in half the time it would normally take. (This is what I am currently using with my 9-year-old) We have only used a couple lessons, but really like it.
JustinGuitar.com – Over 900 completely free guitar lessons!
Little Kids Rock – This site has a few decent guitar, drums, keyboard and more video lessons for free.
GuitarTricks.com – (Not totally free) This is what I started my 9-year-old with recently. It has a few free beginning lessons to start and you can get a 2 week trial for free also, after that it has a monthly tuition, but the video lessons are great and easy to follow along.

Free Piano Lessons for Kids
Hoffman Academy– I’ve heard great things about this website. Easy to follow along video lessons for kids or adults. They offer resources to go along the lessons for a price though. I will be starting this with my 8-year-old soon. We were blessed with a free electric piano recently! So very excited about getting started with this. I found a great review for this site HERE.
PianoLessons4Children.com – Designed for beginner and elementary level. Lessons use music from the public, mostly well-known children’s songs. Easy for parents to use these lessons to both teach your child and to learn along with them, without any prior knowledge of piano. Also includes lessons about famous composers that can be used as music appreciation curriculum, lessons about reading music notes, children’s singalong songs, and LOTS of free sheet music.
Zebra Keys – Over 50 free piano lessons for various levels of difficulty. Each piano lesson is accompanied by visual flash animations that allow learners to view and hear songs as well as play along with the animations on their own piano keyboard. Learning piano with Zebra Keys is fun and easy! Recommended for ages 13 and up.
Lets Play Music – A few free lessons to get started. Lots of other fun Musical resources on this site.
Plern Piano – Free online piano teacher and composer.
