Let’s be real—nobody’s got time to get sick, and seeing your kids feeling crummy? The absolute worst. Between juggling school drop-offs, homeschooling schedules, preparing meals, and trying to remember if you showered today (probably not, let’s be honest), being sidelined by a cold or flu just isn’t in the plans. And pneumonia? That’s a whole different level of not fun. But don’t worry; I’ve got you covered with some natural remedies to help get you back on your feet—or at least make you feel somewhat human again.
As we dig in to these home remedies, let’s not forget the ultimate source of healing. As Christians, we hold on to the truth that Jesus died so we can be whole—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Isaiah 53:5 reminds us, “By His stripes, we are healed.” That promise includes your physical health! So while these remedies are helpful, prayer and faith in God’s healing power are always front and center. God also gave us natural ways to support healing, and they’re such a gift!

Understanding Colds, Flu, and Pneumonia
Natural Remedies for the Common Cold
For a simple cold, staying hydrated is a game-changer. Sipping on water, herbal teas, and broths helps thin mucus and keeps you from getting dehydrated. One of the easiest (and tastiest) remedies? Honey and lemon tea—just mix a spoonful of honey with a squeeze of lemon in warm water to soothe a scratchy throat and quiet a cough. And if your nose feels like it’s stuffed with cement, steam inhalation is a lifesaver. Boil some water, pour it into a bowl, and drape a towel over your head to trap the steam—it’s like a mini spa treatment for your sinuses!
Adding a drop of eucalyptus or peppermint oil enhances the relief. Gargling with warm salt water can also help reduce throat inflammation. And let’s not forget grandma’s wisdom—chicken soup really does work wonders. It provides essential nutrients, hydration, and a dose of comfort when you need it most.
Flu Natural Remedies to Fight Back
Oscillococcinum can be a helpful homeopathic remedy. Many people use it at the first sign of symptoms to potentially reduce flu severity and duration. The recommended protocol is to dissolve one vial under the tongue every 6 hours (up to three times daily) at the onset of symptoms. This is safe for children over 2 years old.
Star anise, a powerful antiviral spice, contains shikimic acid, a key compound in antiviral medications. To use it for flu relief, make star anise tea by steeping 2–3 whole star anise pods in hot water for 10–15 minutes. Drink this 2–3 times daily to support immune function and help fight off viral infections.
When battling the flu, elderberry syrup can be a game-changer. Elderberries are believed to shorten the duration of flu symptoms and boost immunity. Ginger tea, made by steeping fresh ginger in hot water with honey, is excellent for soothing a sore throat and easing nausea. Don’t underestimate the power of garlic, either—it has natural antimicrobial properties. Eating it raw or incorporating it into meals can help your immune system fight back. Of course, rest is non-negotiable when you’re sick. Delegate what you can, clear your schedule, and give your body time to heal.
Most importantly, don’t forget to pray. Speak God’s promises over your health, like 3 John 1:2: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” There is power in declaring His Word over your body.
How to Support Pneumonia Recovery Naturally
Pneumonia is a more serious illness, but natural remedies can complement medical treatment. Mullein leaf tea is a fantastic option for lung health. I purchased this one for my mom and she loves it! It helps clear mucus, reduces inflammation, and soothes irritated airways. Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried mullein leaves in hot water for 10 minutes to make a healing tea, or use a tincture (I love this one) if that’s more convenient.
Turmeric golden milk is another excellent choice for reducing inflammation. Warm up a cup of milk (or plant-based alternative), add a teaspoon of turmeric, a dash of cinnamon, and a pinch of black pepper (black pepper activates the turmeric), then sweeten with honey.
Staying hydrated is critical, so drink water, herbal teas, and broths throughout the day. Gentle breathing exercises can also help expand your lungs and move mucus out, while a humidifier adds moisture to the air, making breathing more comfortable. Finally, turn to God for restoration. Psalm 103:3 says, “He forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.” Lean on His promises and let His peace renew your strength.
Nature’s Antibiotics for Healing
Nature provides powerful natural antibiotics to help fight infections and boost immunity. These remedies are not only effective but also easily accessible, making them wonderful additions to your health routine.
- Garlic, with its active compound allicin, is a standout for its antimicrobial properties. It’s best consumed raw for maximum potency, but you can also add it to meals just before serving to retain its benefits. It’s a simple yet effective way to give your immune system a boost.
- Black seed oil is another potent remedy that supports immune health and may help combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This ancient remedy is often referred to as a cure-all, with some claiming it “cures everything but death.” While that’s quite the reputation, its proven benefits make it worth keeping in your natural health toolkit. We like this one!
- Cinnamon, a spice you probably already have in your pantry, has impressive antifungal properties. It’s an easy addition to teas, smoothies, or oatmeal, offering not only flavor but also a gentle immune boost.
- Turmeric, in addition to reducing inflammation, boasts antibacterial benefits. To ensure your body absorbs its active compound curcumin, don’t forget to pair it with a pinch of black pepper. This simple combination activates its full potential and makes it a powerful tool for supporting your health.
- Oil of oregano (not to be confused with the essential oregano oil) is yet another natural powerhouse. We use this one! Known for its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, it can be used to help fight off a variety of infections. Just a few drops in water or juice can go a long way in supporting your body during illness. However, because it’s highly concentrated, it’s important to use it sparingly and follow dosing recommendations. I take this myself and give it to my teen daughters when they have any symptoms along with Black seed oil and colloidal silver.
- And let’s not forget honey—especially Manuka honey—for its antimicrobial properties and its ability to soothe a sore throat. This golden treasure is not only delicious but also a versatile remedy for cold and flu symptoms. Whether added to tea or taken by the spoonful, honey is a natural healer you’ll want to keep on hand.
These natural antibiotics, when used properly, can complement your wellness routine and provide support during sickness. Always consult a healthcare professional if you’re unsure how to incorporate them or if you’re dealing with a serious illness.
Onions and Potatoes for Healing?
Some surprising remedies include onions and potatoes. Onions have been used for generations to draw out toxins and reduce fever. Slicing an onion and placing it in socks worn overnight is said to help pull sickness out of the body. You can also place a sliced onions on plates around the house and where you will be sleeping to pull the toxins from the air, not sure if it works but I do it lol. Similarly, thin slices of potato placed on the soles of the feet overnight can help reduce fever and draw out impurities. These may sound quirky, but many swear by them for their effectiveness and I’ve noticed a difference.
