When the weather outside is rainy or frigid, finding enjoyable indoor activities for your kids can be a real task. In the context of the ongoing changes in our lives, such as remote learning and varying homeschool situations, it’s increasingly important to discover engaging ways to keep their young hearts and minds active, even in these evolving times.
Many are still focusing on saving and tightening their budgets in 2023 now that we are dealing with extreme inflation. Some are grappling with the uncertainty of their work situations, especially if their children continue to learn from home or if their workplaces face disruptions due to the lingering effects of the pandemic.
We’re all still dealing with lots of unknowns, and none of us want to go overboard spending on activities for our kids. But let’s be honest, with the little ones spending more time at home, cabin fever can sneak up on us. So, I’ve put together a list of budget-friendly kids’ activities and they’re guaranteed to keep your kids smiling and entertained.

INDOOR ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS
1) Giant Wall Easel
You will need to get hold of some old rolls of wallpaper (from a charity shop or wallpaper shop perhaps, or even the back of the cupboard), then use it to cover up a wall. Use the paper back to front and stick it up with drawing pins or tape.
Give your child paints, crayons, chalks, markers (we love these Tombows) and let them create to their heart’s content. The younger kids can do the bottom half, and the older ones can do the top half.
2) Story Time Creativity
Ask your kids to choose a favorite book. Read and discuss the book or a chapter of a book, and get the kid to each make up their own endings. This promotes creativity and can turn any book into a new adventure.

3) Telephone Game Fun
You remember this game right? Have the kids sit in a circle. One person starts the game by whispering a short phrase to their neighbor. They then whisper repeat what they heard to the next child until you get to end. The last one has to say it out loud to see if the phrase made it through correctly. Usually it ends up being something completely different and super silly.
4) Puppet Show Extravaganza
Make finger puppets from paper, animals, people or a mixture of both. Create a show with a script and characters. To build a stage you can use old boxes and stick them together with tape. Cut out a side of a large box at the top and use an old rag to create a curtain. Get the kids to put on a show.
5) Super Cool Wax Creations
Use old crayon stubs and get the kids to make shavings from them. Use a butter knife and collect the shavings on a sheet of wax paper. Carefully lay another sheet of wax paper on top of the creations. Briefly press with a warm iron. Watch the colors melt together. So cool.
6) Jewelry Creation
Collect buttons, beads, string and ribbon in a box. Let the kids create necklaces and bracelets using the different materials. Beaded, knotted and braided techniques are great, just to name a few. Have them make them for friends or family members as a way to encourage caring & giving to others.
7) Kitchen Fun
Dig out your old cook books, let the kids choose a simple recipe and work together on making dinner, dessert, snacks or cakes. Let the older kids do the main cooking while younger kid can do measuring, mixing and decorating. Enjoy your sweet treats picnic style on the living room floor while watching home movies together.
8) Dress Up
Clean out your cupboard of old clothes that you no longer wear. Get 2 large boxes and mark them dress up and rags. Fill the dress up box with outrageous outfits and cut up the other items for the rags box. Let the kids play dress up using the clothes and rags. Hold a fashion show and take lots of pics to capture the memory.
Consider including medieval costumes in your dress-up box to add a touch of historical flair to your dress-up activities. Let your children transform into knights, princesses, or jesters and embark on epic adventures through time, or even some of the cuter déguisement Halloween costumes could be good fun too.
9) Mosaic Collages
Collect some old magazines and some cardstock paper . Give each child a sheet of cardstock paper, the magazines and some PVA glue. Let them tear up the magazines to create mosaic pictures and collages.
10) Growing a Seed
Get a paper towel, fold it into a medium size rectangle then dampen it. Put the seed under the first layer and put the whole lot into a small plastic bag (Ziploc sandwich bag is good). Label the bags with their names so they can monitor the growth of their seed. Close the bag and put it into a kind of dark place, but accessible to the kids so they can watch their seeds grow. Remember to keep them damp.
11) Pass the Story
Get the kids to sit in a circle and play ‘Pass The Story’! This is a fun way for kids to flex their creative muscles. It’s a fun and interactive group storytelling game in which one person starts the story and the next person continues on until everyone has added their piece of the story.
How to Play ‘Pass The Story’-
- Get a small ball or anything small will work really.
- Pick someone to start the story.
- Each child will say a sentence or two and leave a cliff hanger ending, like …The monkey ran to the edge of the cliff and then he… or suddenly…
- That child passes the ball to the next child to add a couple more silly sentences to the story.
I hope you enjoy these indoor activities for kids. Be prepared for lots of laughing and memories to be made!
